Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP)
The Association of Fundraising Professionals, University of Oregon Chapter (AFP-UO)
Students volunteer their time and knowledge to gain professional experience and make a difference in the community
by Stacy Vynne (Candidate Masters ENVS, Nonprofit Certificate ‘08)
The Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP) (http://www.afpnet.org) works to advance philanthropy through advocacy, research, education and certification programs. The association fosters development and growth of fundraising professionals and promotes high ethical standards in the fundraising profession. In 2006, the University of Oregon was invited by AFP as one of only five universities to participate in the AFP Collegiate Chapter program. This UO chapter is composed of both graduate and undergraduate students mostly from the not-for-profit management certificate and nonprofit administration minor programs. It is open to all students in the university who are interested in fundraising. Members of the UO chapter select fundraising projects that meet part of the requirements for being an established chapter and help contribute to the development of local nonprofits. The UO chapter has worked with local nonprofits such as Association Siempre Amigos, which offers counseling and support services to torture survivors from Central and Latin America, Cascades Raptor Center (http://www.eraptors.org), the Eugene Symphony (http://www.eugenesymphony.org), and LEAD (http://www.leadteen.com), an organization devoted to developing the leadership skills of low-income teens. To find out what AFP-UO is currently doing and how you can get involved, please visit their website at http://www.uoregon.edu/~afpuo/ .
