Summary of Interests

Social planning, with a special focus on youth, families, education, and health; the influence of personal characteristics on decision making; research methods and data analysis.

Research Interests

Recent and on-going work includes extensive analyses of cohort variations in violent behavior, with special emphasis on understanding recent upswings in homicide and suicide among youth, both in the United States and cross-culturally; analyzing consumers’ involvement in their own health care and the role of institutional change in prompting this involvement; examining the influence of the built environment and other environmental characteristics on health; examining the relationship of economic trends to changes in family life; exploring social class and race-ethnic differences in dental health; studying influences on student achievement, especially the role of community-level variables studying organizational influences on teacher satisfaction with survey data from Oregon and throughout the nation; analyzing the relationship of gender to educational practices and outcomes both in the United States and cross-culturally; and using multi-level statistical models to analyze experimental data.
