Summary of Interests

Gale MaradelSustainable community development, particularly in small island developing states in the Pacific. Through the Micronesia and South Pacific Program advanced graduate students and community professionals worked with local island counterparts to transfer skills as requested by island governments and organizations. This program has closed due to my retirement. I am currently working with City of Bainbridge Island on the "Winslow Tomorrow" planning and design process for the main street of the community. The plan incorporates economic, social and environmental sustainability concepts, incentives for green building techniques, multi-modal transportation corridors, art and cultural considerations and the implementation of public/private partnerships for development. In February, 2006, I was appointed to a three-year term on the Planning Commission for the Island.

Research Interests

Sustainable community development, particularly from the grass roots; design of functional work environments in the Pacific, integrating traditional and western cultural concepts.

Courses and Seminars

Conflict and Communication, Legal Issues in Planning, Experiencing Crossing Cultures, Alternative Dispute Resolution, Leadership and Facilitation Methods, Pacific Islands Orientation. Freshman seminars on sustainable community development.
