Guidelines for Selecting Students

The department strongly encourages applications from individuals of any race, age, sex, sexual orientation, religion, or ability. We recognize and support that affirmative action and equal opportunity begin with the recruitment process of potential professionals.

The major in planning, public policy and management is offered to upper-division students exclusively. You may apply for admission for the term in which you achieve upper-division standing. The department particularly encourages applicants who have demonstrated scholarly ability and who have some experience, either paid or volunteer, in the public service arena. Applicants should have completed a major portion of the university’s general-education group requirements. A broad liberal-arts background is important for the major in planning, public policy and management. The student should focus on courses for bachelor of arts or bachelor of science students.

The following courses are particularly recommended:

Social Science:

Introduction to Economic Analysis: Microeconomics (EC 201)
Introduction to Economic Analysis: Macroeconomics (EC 202)
Community, Environment, and Society (SOC 304)
United States Politics (PS 201)
State and Local Government (PS 203).

Science:

Computers and Computation (CIS 111)
The Natural Environment (GEOG 141)

Your application package should include the following information:

1. Career Objectives: A statement regarding your career objectives is required within the personal statement. For example, explain what areas of public service you might see yourself working. Do you have a special interest in working with a particular client group? Are you interested in working in a large or small public service organization, a public or nonprofit one? Your statement will be evaluated in terms of how well these objectives are presented and whether or not they are appropriate to the PPPM program. Limit this statement to about three double-spaced typewritten pages.

2. Communication Skills: Because communication skills are critical to a professional in public service, preference is given to applicants who can demonstrate these skills. For example, the career objectives statement is used to evaluate an applicant’s writing ability and style, specifications, whether and how effectively the applicant can communicate. We also evaluate performance in written and oral communication course work.

3. Social Science Background: Students entering PPPM should have completed courses in economics, political science, and sociology. Transfer students may substitute courses with appropriate content.

4. Upper-Division Standing and University Requirements: The major in PPPM is available to upper-division students. You may apply for the term during which you achieve upper-division standing. You must complete at least 30 credits for the major after admission. Preference in admission is given to applicants who have a grade point average (GPA) of 3.00 or better.
