Eugene radiates a relaxed small town feeling with the cultural advantages of a large city. Eugene's climate, with an average temperature of 54 degrees, is one of the city's attractive features. Temperatures occasionally dip into the 20s during the winter, but usually hover in the 30s and 40s. In the summer, the high temperature averages 85 degrees, occasionally reaching the upper 90s. Normal annual rainfall is approximately 45 inches, most of which falls between October and May. 
All of Eugene's amenities are within easy reach of campus by foot, bike, or bus. There are more than 100 miles of bicycle paths. Eugene's central location allows easy access to a world of recreational opportunities with plenty of nightlife occurring when the sun sets. Here are some activities you can do.
15 minutes from campus: You can fish for trout in the river; hike through lush, fragrant forests; rock climb the basalt cliff of Skinner's Butte; relax at a park; play golf at one of 8 courses; or go boating in one of 3 reservoirs.
- 60 minutes from campus: You can walk for miles on pristine public beaches; explore tide pools teeming with life; watch migrating whales and spectacular sunsets from rocky cliffs; float the wild and scenic McKenzie River.
- 90 minutes from campus: You can charge downhill through a flurry of light powder or glide along miles of groomed cross-country ski trails at the Willamette Pass, Odell Lake, Hoodoo or Mt. Bachelor ski areas; camp beneath the summer stars at numerous state parks and on BLM land, enjoy attractions such as OMSI, the zoo, Japanese and rose gardens in Portland, or explore wilderness/roadless areas and clean mountain lakes hidden amid majestic conifers.
When the sun sets, Eugene has plenty of restaurants and entertainment to fulfill your needs. Here are some examples of night time activities.
- Looking for a good meal that’s not over rated? Visit the 5th Street Market on 5th. This part of Eugene is not only a good place for a first date, it is also one of two places where you can have gelato ice cream.
- Eugene offers a variety of cuisine from Indian, Mexican, Japanese, Chinese, Thai, Vietnamese, Italian, French, Mediterranean and Greek. The best way to find the restaurant for your palate is by asking around and reading the Eugene Weekly, or see Chow online.
- Oregon is famous for its microbrews and there are plenty of places to fill your thirst. Closest to campus are: Rennie’s Landing, Taylor's, Max’s and McMennamin's Agate Street Cafe. In downtown Eugene, you can find Horsehead Pub, Rogue Brewery, Jaimeson’s, Steelhead Brewery and more.
- Feeling the need to let loose and show your dance moves? Taboo, Rock & Rodeo and The City might be the place for you. If salsa is what you're looking for, look out for weekly salsa events hosted by local salsa studios.
- Don’t feel like the night scene? Eugene offers you the option of bowling, roller-skating and several movie theatres. Check out the new theatres at the Valley River Center mall or Gateway mall, offering stadium seating and reclining seats. The Bijou shows film festival and avant garde movies.
